New Delhi, Jan 19, 2006 (The Financial
Express): General Motors India
on Wednesday unveiled three new cars - the
Aveo in a hatchback and sedan versions and
a sports back variant of the Chevrolet Optra.
These vehicles are slated to hit Indian
roads between February and June as the company
has targeted increasing its marketshare
in passenger vehicles from 4% now to 10%
by 2010.
The company said it will reveal the prices
and specifications of the three vehicles
closer to their launches. While the premium
hatchÂback, Aveo U-VA would take on die
Suzuki Swift and Hyundai Getz, the sedan
would take on mid-sized vehicles ranging
from die Tata Indigo to the Honda City.
All vehicles will be powered by engines
with capacities between 1.4-1.8 litres,
company officials said refusing to go into
more details. Admitting that GM needs to
be more aggressive, president Rajeev Chaba
said it was also extending capacity at its
Halol plant in Gujarat from 60,000 units
to 85,000 units with an investment of Rs
100 crore.
The company is also opening two additional
parts distribution centre one each in Maharashtra
and Delhi to compliment the existing ones
at Halol and Chennai.
